The Coalition overcame memory limitations on the Xbox Series S during the development of Gears of War: E-Day by using the console solid-state drive as additional memory.
Working with Xbox engineers, the team built a prioritization system that moves inactive elements from the ten gigabytes of RAM to the drive, freeing up about one gigabyte of usable space.
Technical director Kate Rayner stated that traditional methods could not manage the city featuring one million six hundred thousand simultaneous elements, though Lumen reflections were omitted to achieve sixty frames per second.
The constant data swapping consumes processing resources requiring strict optimization, yet other studios have expressed interest in utilizing this approach for future projects.
