Capcom hosted its internal technology conference, Capcom Open Conference RE : 2026, on Friday to detail upcoming evolutions for its proprietary RE Engine. Programmer Satoshi Ishida outlined the publisher's ambition to transform the engine into an AI-generation game engine.

Having debuted with Resident Evil 7 in 2017, the RE Engine has been used as the foundation for nearly 30 games. To address modern AAA production challenges that extend development times, Capcom launched the REX initiative.

The project incorporates a more common programming language to help an artificial intelligence system understand code. Capcom's plan involves the AI eventually writing programs automatically and running test sessions to track bugs.

The publisher also intends to publish certain technologies online for public use in AI training. Official communication clarifies that the integration will occur step-by-step at strategic development stages rather than generating visible player content.
