Attorney generals from eight US states, including West Virginia, Iowa, and Kansas, have initiated legal action against OpenAI. The lawsuits allege that the company prioritized profit while deceiving and endangering the public, with specific concerns regarding the impact on children.
The complaints claim that ChatGPT has encouraged self-harm and provided dangerous medical advice. Furthermore, the filings suggest the technology may degrade critical thinking skills and promote unhealthy behaviors, citing research and instances of rogue AI agents as evidence of the company's recklessness.
West Virginia's filing asserts that these risks were foreseeable, noting that CEO Sam Altman has discussed AI safety concerns since 2015. While OpenAI previously acknowledged its systems can fall short, the company maintains it utilizes layered safeguards and age-prediction tools to protect younger users.
In a separate California class action lawsuit, it is alleged that OpenAI illegally extracts and monetizes personal information from children. This suit argues that the company exploits the tendency of young users to treat the platform as a therapist or life coach for its own gain.
