Cloud Imperium Games has officially launched a Steam store page for Squadron 42, a single-player narrative spinoff of the Star Citizen universe. The developer has scheduled the title for a Q2 2027 release, indicating the game is expected to arrive before July 2027. This timeline follows previous internal targets that originally aimed for a 2015 launch and later a 2026 release window.
The game casts players as a rookie recruit within the UEE Navy during the onset of a galactic conflict. Gameplay involves a mix of space-bound dogfights, ship exploration, and ground-based first-person shooter combat against various alien adversaries. The developer notes that the experience features choices-matter mechanics, implying the potential for multiple narrative outcomes or a moral system.
Players will navigate the campaign across diverse environments, including capital ships, space stations, and frontier outposts. The narrative is designed to be cinematic, featuring an all-star cast that interacts with the player throughout the journey. Success and rank progression are tied to the player's performance in combat and the critical decisions made during the story.
Since the store page went live, the project has already garnered 18,000 followers on the Steam platform. While the game focuses on a single-player experience rather than the multiplayer structure of Star Citizen, it remains a central component of the developer's current production efforts.
