Sony has filed a new patent titled “AI-adapted non-player character for video game system,” which outlines a process for using player-generated gameplay data to modify non-player characters and make them more realistic.

Unlike Nvidia's ACE program, which relies on large language models primarily for dialogue scripts, Sony's proposed system could alter any aspect of an NPC, ranging from its design to its behavior during boss battles. According to Sony, developing realistic NPCs through traditional programming presents challenges due to the limitations of modern game development, extensive scripting requirements, and high costs.

The company states that the patented techniques would allow realistic NPCs to be integrated into video game systems based on player actions without requiring extensive scripting or high hardware resources, while also helping to avoid inflated development budgets and timelines.

As with any patent, there is no guarantee that this specific system will be implemented in a PlayStation 5 or a future console. Potential implementation also raises security concerns regarding cloud data processing and potential risks of data leaks.
