Epic Games has reportedly directed the development team of an unannounced shooter featuring Marvel and Star Wars characters to adopt an "AI-first" production model. According to a Bloomberg report citing internal sources, the project, which was allegedly scheduled for a March release, has been delayed indefinitely.
The directive reportedly mandates that developers cease writing code by hand and instead utilize tools like Anthropic's Claude. Furthermore, the project's art assets are expected to be produced entirely through generative AI workflows, a shift that has prompted internal skepticism among staff regarding the reliability of these tools.
Epic Games communications director Jake Jones stated that the company is embracing "AI-accelerated development," emphasizing that Epic developers remain the creative drivers of their projects. The company has not confirmed the specific details of the Bloomberg report, and Disney has provided no comment on the matter.
This push toward generative AI follows significant financial challenges for Epic, including layoffs affecting over 1000 employees earlier this year. The company previously secured a $1.5 billion investment from Disney in February, though the status and timeline of their collaborative projects remain subject to conflicting reports regarding potential launch dates.
