Nintendo has confirmed it intends to continue supporting physical game media alongside digital options for its Switch 2 console. Bill van Zyll, the company's VP and general manager for Latin America, stated that Nintendo remains agnostic regarding distribution formats to satisfy consumer preferences.

The hardware supports both digital downloads via the Nintendo eShop and physical cartridges. Additionally, the platform introduces Game-Key Cards, which function as authentication keys. These require users to insert the card while simultaneously downloading the software to the console.

While Game-Key Cards have faced criticism, they allow users to resell games because the cards are not linked to individual accounts. Some titles, including first-party releases and Stellar Blade: Complete Edition, still include the full game data directly on the physical cartridge.

This strategy contrasts with Sony, which is reportedly transitioning toward a digital-only marketplace by 2028. Nintendo maintains that it has no current plans to abandon physical media, citing the importance of fan demand in shaping its platform strategy.
