Minecraft is scheduled to receive an upgrade for the Nintendo Switch 2 on Oct. 27. While the game has seen significant success on the original Switch since its 2017 release, the transition to the new hardware comes with specific eligibility requirements for existing players.
The new edition features enhanced visuals and supports save data migration from the original console. However, the free upgrade path is restricted exclusively to users who own the digital version of the game. Owners of physical cartridges are currently ineligible for this offer.
Physical edition owners must purchase the new version at its full price of $29.99 if they wish to access the upgrade. This policy has sparked frustration among the player base, as there is no current indication of alternative compensation or solutions from Nintendo.
Industry speculation suggests this restriction may be a measure to prevent potential loopholes involving physical media duplication, similar to issues observed with previous titles. Digital owners have until Jan. 31, 2027, to claim their free upgrade.
