Microsoft has officially introduced XBOX Labs, a new initiative focused on researching emerging technologies and their potential applications within the gaming industry. Led by XBOX Chief Technology Officer Scott Van Vliet, the project utilizes a specialized team of engineers, scientists, and developers to investigate innovative ideas aimed at transforming how games are created and experienced.
The initiative, announced by XBOX Executive Asha Sharma, seeks to leverage technological advancements to improve game accessibility, revitalize legacy titles, and empower players to become creators. The team intends to explore concepts such as running software on hardware for which it was not originally designed, including porting Windows builds to Apple Silicon or utilizing WebAssembly and WebGPU for browser-based gaming.
XBOX Labs will also investigate the role of artificial intelligence in gaming. Sharma noted that because games share properties with software development—where AI agents already excel at writing and testing code—they represent a significant area for research. This is supported by the scale of the platform, with users spending over 72 billion hours annually playing XBOX titles.
Microsoft plans to build these projects in the open, sharing resulting tools with the broader industry. While the company remains committed to its existing hardware, game development, and intellectual property stewardship, XBOX Labs provides a dedicated space to explore new technology without disrupting current priorities. No specific project timelines have been announced.
