The BFBS Esports Pro League recently concluded at the Royal Air Force Museum in Hendon, crowning a Rocket League Champion for 2026. Esports Insider spoke with BFBS CEO Ben Chapman, Director of AI Culture and Gaming Adam Waters, and Head of BFBS Esports Robert Wylie about how gaming supports the armed forces community.
According to Adam Waters, UK armed forces recognise esports as an official sport with associations in each service. Robert Wylie noted that tournaments are structured flexibly to accommodate deployments, training, and unpredictable schedules, scheduling events primarily on evenings rather than weekends.
Ben Chapman stated that gaming acts as a supplement rather than a replacement for traditional activities, noting it helps deployed personnel stay meaningfully connected with their children via voice chat. Robert Wylie added that events operate under a no rank in the server philosophy, bringing together diverse participants.
Adam Waters highlighted that skills learned through gaming translate well to military service and modern defense needs, such as drone operation. BFBS aims to expand its provision of consoles, subscriptions, and esports competitions across bases and naval vessels.
