Rockstar Games has confirmed that the initial vision for GTA 6 was significantly more expansive than the final product. Internally referred to as Project Americas, the project originally aimed to recreate vast regions across both North and South America before the developers ultimately narrowed the scope to focus on Vice City and its surrounding areas.
Development began taking shape in 2015, with leadership visiting Miami for research. According to director Rob Nelson, the team initially intended to build a massive open world spanning multiple continental regions. However, this vision was eventually scaled back, and the specific details regarding the planned locations or their development progress remain undisclosed.
The project faced significant delays as resources were diverted to assist with Red Dead Redemption 2. This shift required Rockstar to consolidate its teams, which delayed GTA 6 by several years but allowed the studio to leverage tools and experience from the previous title. The core narrative structure, featuring protagonists Jason and Lucia, was not finalized until late 2019.
Following over eight years of development and two release delays, GTA 6 is scheduled to launch on November 19, 2026, for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Rockstar has not yet announced a version for PC.
