Former Rockstar co-founder Dan Houser recently revealed that the iconic box art for Grand Theft Auto 3 was created as a last-minute replacement. The original design was deemed potentially offensive due to its depiction of burning buildings, necessitating a change in the immediate aftermath of the September 11 attacks.

Artist Stephen Bliss completed the new cover design in approximately two evenings. This replacement introduced the signature grid-based shard aesthetic that has since become a staple of the franchise's visual identity, influencing marketing materials for subsequent titles including the upcoming Grand Theft Auto 6.

Rockstar faced significant sensitivity regarding the game's setting, Liberty City, which serves as a parody of New York City. Beyond the artwork, the development team edited specific lines of dialogue and removed other content that was considered inappropriate given the timing of the tragedy.

Following these adjustments, Grand Theft Auto 3 launched in October 2001. The title experienced consistent sales momentum through the end of 2001 and into early 2002, eventually cementing its place within broader cultural history.
