Borderlands Online, a free-to-play MMO spin-off originally planned for exclusive release in China, has been made playable after a build of the game was discovered a year ago.
Modder EpicNNG described the project as requiring an immense amount of work, surpassing anything they had done before by one million times. The restoration process required bypassing the login screen and translating the game into English, which included customising UI and HUD elements to accommodate character format differences.
The team decided to release the project now rather than waiting until the end of the year, driven by concerns over the rapid advancement of artificial intelligence. Notably, the project avoided using generative AI.
EpicNNG stated that no money is being made from the project and that they will halt development if publisher Take-Two orders them to stop, though no official communication has been received yet despite tip-offs.
