The manga Manchurian Opium Squad, originally created by Tsukasa Monma and illustrated by Shikako, is resuming serialization. The series had been on hiatus since the end of last year following the passing of Shikako, who died at age 37 from choroidal malignant melanoma.

The narrative follows Isamu Hinokata, a soldier drafted into the Kwantung Army in Showa 12. After losing his right eye in battle, he becomes an agricultural volunteer and discovers a poppy field used for opium production. To save his ailing mother, he begins manufacturing the drug, a choice that alters his fate and the future of Manchuria.

In accordance with Shikako's final wishes to have the story completed, the production team appointed Tsurushima, a former assistant to Yasuhisa Hara, as the new artist. Shikako will be credited as the original character designer for future chapters of the series, which began its run on Comic DAYS in 2020.

Alongside the return of the manga, the production team officially announced that an anime adaptation is currently in development. Further details regarding the upcoming animated project have not yet been disclosed by the official sources.
