Shanghai-based developer 12AM BLACKOUT recently unveiled its upcoming psychological horror game, JIAOHUN, during the Triple-i Initiative showcase. Set in the fictional Baishui County town of Xiannv, the narrative follows the mysterious decline of a small community struggling against the tides of the new century.

Built using Unreal Engine 5, the game utilizes a cinematic first-person perspective to immerse players in its unsettling atmosphere. The visual presentation alternates between 4:3 and 2.39:1 aspect ratios, mimicking the aesthetic of vintage film and videotape to evoke a sense of being trapped within a forgotten end-of-the-century recording.

Gameplay focuses on environmental exploration and puzzle-solving, featuring detailed recreations of traditional Chinese architecture like brick houses and tenement buildings. The developers emphasize a core theme of obsession, exploring how the anxieties and desires of residents during the turn of the millennium manifest as psychological terrors.

JIAOHUN is currently scheduled for release in 2027. The title will be available for players on PC via Steam and PlayStation 5.
