A new theatrical project titled Space Battleship Yamato √2199 has been officially announced for the classic science fiction franchise. Hideaki Anno will serve as the planner and general production chief, while also sharing directorial duties alongside Yutaka Izubuchi.
The original Space Battleship Yamato first premiered on October 6, 1974, and marked its 52nd anniversary on the day of the announcement. The franchise centers on the titular human spacecraft on a cosmic adventure, holding a significant place in Japanese science fiction history and inspiring numerous spin-offs and creators.
The upcoming anime film is being collaboratively produced by Production I.G and Studio Khara. Commenting on the project, Hideaki Anno stated that the work is undertaken not only for youthful dreams, but also with the hope of continuing to create a Space Battleship Yamato that carries expectations for both current and future generations.
