Microsoft has officially launched Xbox Labs, a specialized team comprised of scientists, engineers, and game developers. This initiative is dedicated to researching the potential applications of artificial intelligence in the fields of game porting and modding.
The formation of this group follows a recent surge in AI-assisted projects, such as running titles like Mario Kart 8 in browsers or integrating characters from one game into the world of another. These developments utilize the Claude Opus 5.5 model to decompile and rebuild software for hardware platforms not originally intended for those titles.
Xbox CEO Asha Sharma noted that these experiments challenge traditional industry boundaries between hardware and software. According to Sharma, the goal is to improve game accessibility, revitalize older titles, and empower players to act as co-creators, all while maintaining existing development projects.
Interested parties can currently sign up via the official Xbox Labs website. Registrants receive a confirmation email stating that the team is actively developing initial experiments and will provide updates when playable content becomes available.
