The European rating agency PEGI has implemented stricter age classification standards for titles containing paid random items. This shift, which began in June, moves games previously categorized as PEGI 3 directly to a PEGI 16 rating to better address interactive risks.
These updated criteria, announced in March, target specific mechanics such as in-game purchases, communication features, and systems that encourage prolonged play. The framework aims to address modern concerns beyond traditional content like violence or sexual themes.
EA Sports FC 27 serves as a primary example of this policy, receiving a PEGI 16 rating due to its inclusion of player packs, season passes, and FC points. In contrast, earlier entries like EA Sports FC 25 maintained a PEGI 3 rating.
While PEGI has adopted these changes, the North American ESRB has stated it will not follow suit, citing concerns that such additions could confuse parents. Consequently, EA Sports FC 27 retains an E (Everyone) rating from the ESRB.
