New data from gaming consultancy Open World suggests that competitive shooters and sports titles face the highest risk of losing their player base to the upcoming launch of Grand Theft Auto 6. The assessment highlights that even titles with highly dedicated communities are vulnerable to this shift in player attention.

The analysis utilized historical player overlap and launch intent metrics to identify at-risk games. Titles including Call of Duty, Battlefield, Apex Legends, Fortnite, EA Sports FC, and NBA 2K are expected to see the most significant impact. Conversely, Counter-Strike 2 remains an outlier due to its PC-only availability and lower reported intent to play the new title at launch.

Open World notes that players who favor movement-focused, high-stakes, or open-world gameplay are the most likely to migrate. With 69% of console and PC gamers planning to play the title, and Sensor Tower estimating 6.08 million digital pre-orders in the US totaling $594 million as of October 13, the market impact is substantial.

To mitigate losses, Open World advises developers to avoid major marketing or content updates during the launch window. Instead, teams are encouraged to maintain baseline activity and track actual player behavior to time re-engagement efforts effectively, rather than relying on a fixed calendar.
