French artist duo Atelier Sentô is set to release their new horror visual novel, The Doll Shop, on Steam on October 12. The developers, Cecile Brun and Olivier Pichard, are known for creating works inspired by their travels in Japan, including their award-winning manga about Japanese folklore.
The game follows a young doll maker who returns to a remote, snow-covered village and reunites with a childhood friend. Players must navigate a narrative that blends romance and horror, ultimately forcing the protagonist to choose between his beloved dolls and the hope for a new life.
Gameplay combines adventure elements with visual novel storytelling. Players can explore the village, visit local shops or shrines, and repair eerie dolls. Interaction requires caution, as specific dialogue choices can lead to unexpected consequences. The game features three distinct endings, with a hidden conclusion unlocked upon discovering all others.
The title is defined by its hand-drawn aesthetic, which draws inspiration from the snowy landscapes of Niigata Prefecture where the creators previously resided. A free demo is currently available on the Steam store page for those interested in the game's unique atmosphere.
