Kazuo Hirai, a prominent figure in PlayStation history, recently disclosed in an interview with Nikkei XTrend that he frequently disregarded instructions issued by Sony's central headquarters during his tenure leading the gaming division.
This operational autonomy allowed the PlayStation team to shield its creative vision from traditional corporate bureaucracy. Observers note that this level of independence within the broader Sony structure is no longer present today.
Despite his history of defiance, Hirai was appointed president and CEO of Sony Corporation in 2012. He assumed this leadership role during a period of significant company uncertainty and financial difficulty.
During his six-year term as CEO, Hirai visited nearly 50 cities across more than 20 countries to engage directly with employees. He implemented the KANDO philosophy, which focused on creating emotionally moving experiences and helped define the company's culture during the PlayStation 4 era.
