The Halo franchise has transitioned to Activision Blizzard as part of an Xbox decision that also reduces Halo Studios to a support studio for existing games in the series. Following this move, the popular franchise is entering a new era under the publisher of Call of Duty, with potential plans for a fresh reboot.

Reports from insider Rebs Gaming outline behind-the-scenes plans at Xbox, indicating that Activision will indeed reboot Halo with a title centered on the origins of Master Chief. Initial concepts reportedly involved separating Halo into a free-to-play multiplayer mode and a paid campaign that would bypass the events of Infinite without discarding all established canon. However, plans shifted so that both multiplayer and campaign will be bundled together in a paid package.

Despite the shift in bundling, the core objective to return to Master Chief's origins and bypass portions of the work created by Halo Studios remains active. This approach aims to leave Infinite behind and establish a new direction for the franchise.

Additionally, Sledgehammer Games is set to support and lead the new team on this initial Halo project, having already developed a concept for the game's core mechanics. The project reportedly utilizes the Infinity Ward engine, suggesting that Activision will bypass the Unreal Engine 5 previously used by Halo Studios.
