Key information
Market research firm Circana reported that US PlayStation hardware sales have reached their lowest level since 2013. Data through August shows a 25% decline in sales volume compared to the same period last year, marking a significant downturn for the platform.
While the PS5 is currently in its twilight phase, it remains younger than the PS3 was in 2013 when Sony launched the PS4. Unlike that transition period, there is currently no information regarding a successor console, and rising component costs complicate the potential for a rapid release of new hardware.
Despite lower unit sales, the average price of a PS5 in the US rose to 597 dollars, an increase of approximately 20% over the previous year. This shift is attributed to factors such as the sales mix of different models, including higher-priced versions. Consequently, while August hardware unit sales dropped 11% year-over-year, total revenue from hardware actually increased by 17%.
This trend of declining hardware volume and rising prices is not unique to Sony, as Xbox hardware sales also hit record lows since the brand's inception. In response to these market conditions, Sony is shifting its strategic focus toward expanding its service and content businesses, including a move to prioritize intellectual property development over traditional hardware-centric events.
