Key information
Xbox has officially announced the formation of a new division named XP, led by former Mojang Studios president Kayleen Walters. The division aims to extend Xbox gaming intellectual properties into broader entertainment sectors, including film, television, merchandise, brand partnerships, and theme park experiences. The name XP, derived from the gaming term Experience Points, reflects the company's ambition to engage players beyond their active playtime.
XP consolidates previously fragmented business units into four distinct pillars: Xbox Pictures for linear storytelling, Xbox Products for licensing and merchandise, Xbox Places for live events and theme parks, and Xbox Partnerships for brand collaborations. This strategic shift aligns with the company's long-term goal of becoming the world's largest entertainment entity by transforming games into enduring, cross-generational franchises.
The division will oversee existing projects like the Fallout series on Amazon Prime Video and the upcoming Gears of War film on Netflix. However, the initiative faces challenges in maintaining quality, as evidenced by the cancellation of the Halo television series on Paramount+ in 2024 following two seasons of lukewarm reception.
Concurrently, Maria Angelidou-Smith will succeed Walters as CEO of Mojang Studios on October 19. Her appointment follows a period of significant organizational restructuring at Xbox, which has included the closure of five studios and the reduction of approximately 3,200 positions earlier this year.
