Key information
Data from Circana’s US Retail Tracking Service reveals a significant downturn in the American gaming hardware market for the year-to-date period ending August 2026. According to industry advisor Mat Piscatella, Xbox hardware unit sales have plummeted 33% compared to the previous year, marking an all-time low for the platform in the United States.
PlayStation hardware performance is similarly struggling, with unit sales down 25% year-over-year. This decline represents the lowest sales level for the brand since 2013, the year preceding the launch of the PlayStation 4.
Rising costs are a major factor in this market contraction. Consumers are paying record-high prices for new consoles, with the average price for an Xbox reaching $529, a 26% increase, while PlayStation consoles averaged $597, up 20%. These figures reflect broader global economic pressures and rising component costs.
Looking ahead, Piscatella suggests that a major title launching in November—widely identified as GTA 6—could potentially mitigate these sales declines. However, he cautions that the industry's recovery remains contingent on hardware inventory levels, which are currently impacted by ongoing supply shortages for RAM and other essential components.
