Key information
Xbox CEO Asha Sharma has denied that there are plans to sell Microsoft's gaming division, despite recent cuts that included laying off 268 staff in the second of multiple planned rounds for this financial year. The organizational structure has also shifted, moving away from independent studios to consolidate remaining teams under a small number of arms led by bosses from Activision and Bethesda.
Prior to these changes, a June report from The Information via Reuters indicated that executives Satya Nadella and Amy Hood considered restructuring or spinning out Xbox as a wholly owned subsidiary to potentially facilitate a sale or joint venture in the future.
Speaking to the New York Times, Sharma dismissed those plans, stating directly that Xbox is not for sale. She added that the company will do whatever is necessary for success, including looking at the right operating models and partnerships.
Xbox stated following last month's reductions that they are roughly three-quarters through the cuts and studio divestitures initiated after Sharma replaced outgoing CEO Phil Spencer.
