Key information
Xbox has introduced a new division called Xbox Labs, an initiative focused on increasing game accessibility, particularly through web browsers. Despite the current industry trend of using generative AI for game ports and remasters, the official announcement from Xbox notably omits any reference to artificial intelligence.
CEO Asha Sharma highlighted recent technical shifts where games are being decompiled and rebuilt for new hardware. This includes translating Windows PC builds for Apple Silicon and utilizing WebAssembly and WebGPU to run titles directly in browsers, with WebGPU now reaching 90% global support.
CTO Scott Van Vliet is leading a team to transform emerging concepts into consumer experiences. These efforts aim to challenge traditional industry boundaries between software and hardware, as well as how players discover games, while navigating the controversial reception of AI-assisted development in Western markets.
While some studios use AI to address rising development costs and time, Xbox Labs may serve to influence public perception. Microsoft, the parent company, maintains a significant financial interest in AI technology, which has already contributed to a notable increase in corporate profits.
