Key information

Microsoft announced the creation of a new Xbox division called XP on October 8, 2026. The name plays on the gaming term for Experience Points and aims to extend the reach of Xbox intellectual properties beyond the games themselves.

The division consolidates functions previously scattered across multiple teams, including film and television production under Xbox Pictures, licensed merchandise via Xbox Products, and live events or theme park attractions through Xbox Places. Additionally, Xbox Partnerships will manage collaborations with brands and creators.

Kayleen Walters, formerly of Mojang, has been appointed as the president of XP. Walters previously spent 13 years at Lucasfilm and is credited with growing the Minecraft merchandise business into a multi-billion dollar operation with over 250 licensees. Maria Angelidou-Smith will succeed her as the new CEO of Mojang.

This organizational restructuring aligns with the strategic priorities of Creation and Connection, which were outlined by Xbox CEO Asha Sharma in July 2026 as part of a broader four-pillar framework for the company's future.
