Key information
Square Enix released an update for the Steam version of Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD Remaster on October 1. While the official patch notes only state that various bugs were fixed, community reports indicate that the long-standing green screen bug has finally been addressed.
The green screen bug caused parts or all of the screen to turn green during cutscenes, often obscuring critical narrative moments. This issue was attributed to the game being a 32-bit application with a 2GB virtual address space limit, which frequently triggered crashes or graphical errors during extended play sessions or when using high settings.
User reports suggest that this update resolves both the green screen issue and various game crashes. Previously, players relied on workarounds like lowering graphical settings or using third-party patches to increase the virtual address space to 4GB. The prevalence of these bugs had negatively impacted the game's Steam review scores, which dropped from a 91% positive rating to 75% in the last year.
The update arrives as the series celebrates the 25th anniversary of Final Fantasy X. The game remains available on PC, PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and Nintendo Switch 2, with the Steam version continuing to offer unique features such as high-speed mode and combat enhancements.
