Key information
World of Warcraft is crossing over with Dungeons & Dragons through a forthcoming 256-page book titled Dungeons & Dragons: World of Warcraft, scheduled for release on November 17. The adaptation will bring Blizzard's universe to the tabletop role-playing game without offering an exact replica of the original MMORPG.
The release introduces characters from 16 Azeroth races, featuring both familiar fantasy options and brand-new additions such as draenei, dracthyr, taurens, pandaren, trolls, vulpera, worgen, mechagnomes, and undead. It also incorporates unique subclasses like Death Knights, Demon Hunters, and Paladins, alongside 60 spells and a familiar profession system.
Lead designer James Wyatt explained that the project is not a direct translation, noting that blending the systems directly would not yield a satisfying result. He emphasized that the adaptation focuses on providing the freedom of D&D, allowing players to interact with environment elements and converse with any character.
Notable adjustments include scaling down large raid encounters, such as Onyxia's Lair, into small group battles for four to five players rather than twenty or forty participants. Furthermore, players cannot expect repeated encounters for specific gear drops, nor can they simply die and respawn, while Horde and Alliance faction conflicts remain flexible.
