The Wizards of the Coast-CWA union is broadening its scope to incorporate the Dungeons & Dragons team alongside Team X, which manages Magic: The Gathering and Duel Masters. This expansion follows the successful unionization of the Arena team earlier this April.
A primary demand from the union is for Hasbro and Wizards leadership to cease the implementation of generative AI and large language models. The organization argues that management has prioritized these technologies despite internal opposition, necessitating a formal, enforceable policy that reflects employee values.
Furthermore, the union is advocating for employees to retain ownership of creative projects developed during their personal time. The group contends that the company should not dictate or claim rights to work produced outside of professional duties using private resources.
Wizards of the Coast faces an October 13 deadline to voluntarily recognize the expanded unit. Previously, the company declined to recognize the Arena team, leading to a contested election. In May, leadership cautioned staff that unionization could result in varied compensation outcomes, suggesting that direct communication remains the most effective approach.
