Key information
Valve may be developing a mid-generation refresh of the Steam Frame headset featuring OLED optics. References to a device codenamed Plano were discovered within the Steam Frame kernel source code by SteamFrameHub.
The proposed Plano model would retain most specifications of the current hardware but upgrade to OLED panels. These displays would offer a per-eye resolution of 3,552x3,840, a significant increase over the 2,160x2,160 pancake lenses currently utilized.
SteamFrameHub suggests these optics align with those in the Samsung Galaxy XR, which retails for approximately $1,799. Given the ongoing RAM crisis, a potential OLED Steam Frame would likely exceed that price point.
Valve is currently managing reservation lists for existing hardware, suggesting any OLED release remains distant. The company's hardware strategy continues to be impacted by the persistent RAM shortage, despite high demand for current devices.
