Key information

Dressmaker is a cozy game focused on clothing design and tailoring that has turned into a viral success on Steam. Developed by Cozy Lives and published by Free Lives, the project originated from a personal story involving Jonathan Hau-Yoon and his wife, Sabrina Becker.

Becker had dreamed of working in costume design, but her future plans were halted after she was diagnosed with hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, an inherited disorder causing chronic pain and very flexible joints. To help her experience virtual success as a dressmaker, Hau-Yoon and Becker designed a game incorporating sewing, fabric selection, and design without physical limitations.

The duo built the concept in roughly three weeks and convinced Free Lives to publish the title without using early access. Marketing efforts included a TikTok video detailing the gameplay that generated over half a million views, followed by a free prototype version reaching one hundred thousand downloads in two months.

Released on September 21, Dressmaker achieved positive reception with a ninety-eight percent positive review score on Valve's platform and reached forty-three thousand two hundred ninety-eight concurrent players in its first week. The game also claimed the sixteenth spot among global best sellers on Steam, generating over two hundred fifty thousand dollars in profit.
