Key information
S-GAME is developing Phantom Blade Zero, an action title that seeks to establish its own unique genre. The game features a protagonist named Soul, an elite assassin framed for murder who must navigate a 66-day countdown to find a cure and uncover a conspiracy within the Wulin martial world.
The gameplay structure is described as a three-layered pyramid: a semi-open world RPG base, intricate 3D level design with metroidvania elements, and a high-octane combat system. Movement is highly vertical, utilizing stairs, ropes, and shortcuts. Checkpoints are managed via bells, which restore health and reveal map areas, while travel talismans allow limited teleportation.
Combat emphasizes rhythm and stamina management rather than simple button mashing. Players must read opponents, block, parry, and dodge to exploit openings. The reviewer noted that bosses are particularly memorable, often functioning like choreographed dances. However, a potential point of frustration is that enemies do not stagger when hit, requiring players to adapt to their relentless aggression.
The game offers four difficulty modes, including the challenging 66 Days mode where each death consumes one of the protagonist's limited days. Higher difficulties increase enemy aggression and introduce new mechanics. Phantom Blade Zero is the studio's first AAA project, built using Unreal Engine 5, and is scheduled for release on PS5 and PC on October 28.
