Key information
Panic's Playdate, a unique handheld featuring a black-and-white screen and a physical crank, has continued to grow its library since its 2022 launch. The device recently introduced its third season of games, further expanding the platform's offerings.
Season 3 consists of eight titles released in pairs weekly over four weeks for $39. Current releases include Soggy Froggy, an arcade game focused on temperature management, and Gloom Gate, a dungeon-crawling RPG noted by Andrew Webster for its impressive 3D graphics and combat mechanics reminiscent of Infinity Blade.
Webster notes that while the Playdate cannot run major modern console releases and remains a largely solitary experience, it offers a diverse library through its seasons, the Catalog store, and sideloading capabilities. The device is described as a refreshing, inventive alternative to mainstream gaming trends.
Despite a $30 price increase last year due to production costs, the handheld currently retails for $229. Webster suggests this remains a strong value compared to rising costs elsewhere in the industry, noting that most individual games for the platform are priced at only a few dollars.
