Key information
Tarn Adams, who has developed the simulation game Dwarf Fortress alongside his brother Zach since 2002, remains highly enthusiastic about the project. The team is currently focused on the Myth and Magic update, which introduces procedurally generated magic systems and complex mythological histories to the game world.
The game features deep procedural generation, allowing for emergent player experiences like building functional computers within the game. The new magic system's generator is written in Lua, enabling modders to customize or replace the procedural trees to create unique content.
Adams expresses strong opposition to generative AI, citing concerns regarding industry layoffs and the quality of AI-generated code. He states he has no intention of using generative AI in Dwarf Fortress, noting it would not improve his productivity and that he prefers traditional procedural methods.
Following its 2022 Steam launch, Dwarf Fortress surpassed 1 million copies sold by April 2025. While the game remains self-sustaining, the team of approximately 15 people relies on attracting new players to fund ongoing development, as all updates are provided for free without paid DLC.
