Key information

Sword Sage: Awakening is a China-developed action-RPG drawing inspiration from Chinese folklore, featuring a cheerier and more buoyant tone than typical Soulslike titles. Players control Pei Sanniang, a novice disciple of the Yuangong Sect tasked with disposing of malevolent entities known as yaoguai. The game features platform availability yet to be confirmed for PC via Steam and PS5, with developer Sword Panda Games also hoping to eventually add Xbox and Switch 2 to the release list.

The title incorporates familiar Soulslike elements such as linear pathways with occasional exploratory detours, shortcuts, and glowing kettle lanterns where players can summon Rosy Roundhound's tea shop to rest and restore limited elixirs. However, it also introduces pacier mechanics, including automatic conversion of earned XP into merits for a busy skill tree, and various reprieves for players struggling with combat rhythms.

Combat centers on fast swordplay that drains enemy Vital Energy to open them up for powerful Vital Strikes, alongside a distinct directional evasion system replacing traditional rolls. Weapons degrade quickly when used to block attacks, but can be instantly reforged at the press of a button. The campaign is expected to take between 12 to 18 hours to complete across three chapters.
