Key information
Valve released a stable Steam client update on October 13, introducing significant interface enhancements for both Steam Deck and the PC Big Picture Mode. The update focuses on visual customization, bringing features previously seen in community plugins into the official software experience.
A key addition is the Big Art Mode, which shifts the focus from simple lists to prominent game artwork. Users can enable this via the settings menu to achieve a console-like aesthetic, where the selected game's primary visual takes center stage, pushing recent play history further down the screen.
The update also introduces customizable screensavers, offering options like slideshows of game art or retro-style Steam logo animations. Players can display recent game art or personal screenshots during idle periods. Valve further allows users to import custom screensaver files into a designated folder, mirroring the flexibility previously offered for custom boot animations.
Beyond aesthetics, the update improves Steam client startup speeds and optimizes download performance for high-latency networks. Steam Deck users gain a personal calendar on the home screen and a new option to boot directly into the KDE desktop environment, streamlining the transition for those using the device as a PC.
