Key information
Valve released a Steam client update on October 14, introducing significant visual and functional improvements to the Big Picture mode. This interface, designed for controller-based navigation on devices like Steam Deck and gaming PCs, now features a more console-like aesthetic.
The update adds a Big Art mode, which prominently displays the key art of recently played games at the top of the home screen. Additionally, a new screensaver feature activates after five minutes of inactivity, allowing users to showcase game art, personal screenshots, or a custom bouncing Steam logo.
Technical enhancements include the integration of Pyrowave, a video codec developed by Hans-Kristian Arntzen for Remote Play. This codec aims to provide lower latency by utilizing five to ten times more bandwidth than previous options, with Valve recommending a wired LAN connection for the host PC.
Further updates include the addition of a personal calendar to the home screen's recommended tab and general improvements to client startup performance. Users on Linux and those utilizing Steam Input may find specific optimizations in the full patch notes.
