Key information
Valve has released a new Steam client beta update aimed at refining the experience on Linux systems. A significant change in this version is the automatic configuration of Windows programs added as non-Steam games to execute through Proton by default.
This update streamlines the setup process for users by removing manual compatibility configuration steps. By defaulting to Proton, Valve aims to reduce the technical burden on consumers, shifting the responsibility for initial compatibility away from the end user.
Beyond the Proton integration, the beta addresses several technical issues. These include fixes for library playtime display errors, controller reordering bugs on Linux, and problems where the Steam Controller's BLE mode would remain stuck. Additionally, the update resolves issues where non-Steam games failed to launch after modifying target binaries.
The update also introduces a new feature allowing users to disable the screensaver while playing games. These improvements align with Valve's broader strategy to enhance SteamOS and hardware optimization, further simplifying the Linux gaming experience for the platform's user base.
