Key information
Sony has officially announced Quick Spectral Super Resolution (QSSR), a brand new AI upscaling technology designed specifically for standard PlayStation 5 consoles. The rollout of this feature was outlined in a PlayStation Blog announcement and initially reported by Video Games Chronicle, with patches arriving on Thursday, October 1, to introduce the technology as an optional graphics setting.
The first titles to incorporate QSSR are Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei. Functioning as an evolution of the PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) upscaler utilized on the PS5 Pro, QSSR aims to enhance image stability and detail on base hardware, and Sony intends to make the tool broadly available to PlayStation developers moving forward.
Technical evaluations by Digital Foundry highlighted that QSSR successfully enhances temporal stability, sub-pixel handling, and fine detail while mitigating motion-related foliage artifacts. These visual enhancements were noted as especially significant in Marvel’s Wolverine, whereas Ghost of Yōtei displayed comparatively subtle improvements due to its already solid baseline image quality.
While these two games represent the exclusive launch lineup for the feature, Sony's broader distribution strategy equips developers with an alternative upscaling method for current hardware. However, the company has not confirmed support for any additional titles or indicated that the base console will achieve parity with the PS5 Pro's PSSR capabilities.
