Key information
Cloud Imperium Games has officially opened Steam wishlists for Squadron 42, the single-player campaign set within the Star Citizen universe. The studio confirmed a new release target of Q2 2027 for PC players, accompanied by a fresh cinematic trailer and a full cast reveal.
The game features a variety of gameplay mechanics, including first-person combat, platforming, puzzles, and ship customization. Players can also engage in hacking, off-duty activities, and narrative-driven choices. Set in 2945, the story follows a rookie serving in the United Empire of Earth’s Navy, featuring performances by Ian Duncan and Alix Wilton Regan.
Development of this spiritual successor to Wing Commander has spanned 12 years under the leadership of Chris Roberts. The project was previously targeting a 2026 release, but was delayed in August due to concerns regarding the crowded release window surrounding Grand Theft Auto 6.
While the wider Star Citizen project has surpassed $1 billion in funding, it continues to face criticism regarding its long development cycle and the sale of expensive virtual ships. The title remains without a confirmed release window for the broader project.
