Key information
At the Portland Retro Gaming Expo on October 11, 2026, Electronic Arts producer Jim Vessella announced the development of a remastered version of the space combat simulator Wing Commander III. The project, titled Wing Commander III 30th Anniversary Edition, aims to revive the title 32 years after its original release.
The remaster will feature video footage sourced from original tapes, digitized by Vessella through an Electronic Arts archive restoration project. While specifically branded as a 30th-anniversary edition of the 1994 title, reports from PC Gamer suggest the package may also include the original 1990 Wing Commander and its 1991 sequel, Wing Commander II.
The series is noted for its space combat gameplay and the integration of full-motion video sequences. These elements influenced the spiritual successor Squadron 42, which features actors like Mark Hamill and John Rhys-Davies, both of whom participated in the original Wing Commander III.
Wing Commander III 30th Anniversary Edition is scheduled for release in the second quarter of 2027. The title will be available on PC via Steam, GOG.com, and the EA app, with Steam store listings confirming support for Japanese subtitles.
