Key information

Sony has reportedly introduced a new hardware revision for the PlayStation 5 Slim console, aimed at optimizing manufacturing and addressing various issues. Information regarding the update emerged after repair technician @Modyficator89 posted photos on X of a console originating from the Marvel's Wolverine Limited Edition Bundle, revealing a new motherboard labeled EDM-051.

The latest hardware iteration includes several adjustments designed to enhance thermal performance, longevity, and repairability. While Sony continues to use liquid metal as the thermal interface material between the APU and the heatsink, the surrounding barrier has been redesigned to leave less metal exposed. This modification creates a tighter seal to prevent the conductive compound from spreading to nearby components. Additionally, the heatsink features a rebuilt construction utilizing different materials compared to earlier units, mirroring an approach previously seen in the PS5 Pro.

Other internal modifications involve a more affordable HDMI retimer chip, suggesting cost-trimming measures by the manufacturer, and a relocated CMOS battery positioned for easier access without requiring a full console teardown. As these findings are currently based on a single teardown report, Sony has not officially confirmed the updates, and independent testing has not yet verified the impact on reliability or cooling efficiency.
