Key information

Sony has filed a patent entitled "AI-adapted non-player character for video game system," which outlines a method for utilizing player-generated data to modify non-player characters and make them more lifelike.

Unlike programs such as Nvidia's ACE that primarily focus on scripted dialogue through large language models, Sony's proposed system aims to alter multiple aspects of an NPC, ranging from its design to its behavior during boss fights. The company highlights that creating believable NPCs currently requires extensive scripting, programming, rendering engines, and simulation systems that increase development time and budgets.

The patent argues that implementing an AI-adapted NPC can bypass these development challenges and resource limitations while seamlessly integrating characters that react to or exhibit player behaviors. As with any patent, there is no guarantee that this technology will be implemented in a commercial PlayStation console.
