PlayStation has faced significant challenges in establishing virtual reality within the console market since the 2023 launch of PSVR2. Despite the hardware release, Sony has provided limited support for the device, casting doubt on the platform's long-term future.
The company's internal software output has been sparse, limited to titles like Horizon Call of the Mountain, Firewall Ultra, and My First Gran Turismo. Notably, Sony failed to port successful titles from the original PSVR, such as Astro Bot Rescue Mission, while its experienced studio Firesprite is currently occupied with Until Dawn.
According to ZDNet Korea, Sony's commitment to the technology is further questioned by its recent dealings with Meta. Between June and September 2026, Sony sold 43 United States AR/VR/MR patents to Meta, part of a broader December 2025 agreement to transfer 419 global patents developed between 2010 and 2022.
While a 2024 PC adapter release allows users who paid 600 euros for the headset to access Steam games, production was reportedly paused after manufacturing just over 2 million units.
