Sony announced in a blog post that the standard PlayStation 5 is receiving AI-driven upscaling via Quick Spectral Super Resolution (QSSR), bringing technology previously restricted to the PlayStation 5 Pro to the base console. Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei are slated as the first titles to support QSSR.

While PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) utilizes pixel-by-pixel AI analysis to upscale frames on the PS5 Pro, its high computational demands previously prevented it from running on the base hardware. Sony explains that QSSR features a streamlined neural-network architecture and hand-tuned implementation designed to optimize performance on the standard PS5, serving as a new performance tier rather than replacing PSSR.

Sony plans to make the QSSR library available to all PlayStation developers rather than restricting it to internal studios, offering teams an option to balance resolution, performance, and image quality. Jasmin Patry, Lead Rendering Engineer at Sucker Punch Productions, noted that QSSR achieves fine detail resolution and temporal stability previously unattainable on the base console.

Developed in collaboration with AMD under Project Amethyst, QSSR acts as a software-level upgrade that helps deliver sharper visuals in supported games. However, Sony clarifies that the technology does not turn the standard console into a PlayStation 5 Pro.
