Key information

Sony has finalized an agreement signed in December 2025 to transfer 419 global virtual reality patents to Meta. According to reports from ZDNet Korea, 180 of these patents were filed within the United States, while the remaining intellectual property spans regions including Japan, China, Korea, and Europe.

The transferred assets encompass technologies related to augmented reality, mixed reality, and head-mounted display systems. Between June and September of this year, Sony had already transitioned more than 40 of these specific patents to Meta's control.

This shift coincides with Sony appearing to scale back its virtual reality operations. Notably, the company will skip the Consumer Electronics Show next year for the first time since the event's 1967 inception, citing a strategic pivot toward intellectual property and technology designed to support creators.

Meta continues to invest in hardware despite its Reality Labs division reporting $19.2 billion in losses for FY25. The company recently closed three VR studios and plans to launch new VR Glasses in Spring 2027 for $1,299.99, while simultaneously discontinuing its Quest VR platform to prioritize mobile development.
