RuneScape developer Jagex recently held its annual convention, RuneFest, showcasing new content for its titles. However, a cinematic trailer for the RuneScape 3 Dragon Slayer 2 quest sparked widespread community anger following the unexpected appearance of generative artificial intelligence assets.

Viewers quickly identified visual anomalies within the sketched-style promotional video, pointing out distinct errors such as a hand featuring six fingers and footwear resembling fantasy Air Jordans.

The incident drew intense criticism because Jagex staff had very recently condemned generative artificial intelligence, explicitly promising on Reddit that the company does not utilize such technology to replace human creators, nor in marketing, merchandising, or partnerships.

Following the backlash, Jagex removed the video and issued an apology, explaining that an external partner produced the trailer despite explicitly confirming generative tools would not be used. The company acknowledged that these repeated partner issues demand an urgent overhaul of internal review processes.
