Key information

Developer Jagex announced RuneScape 4 during RuneFest 2026, marking the upcoming fourth generation of the MMORPG franchise under the provisional title RS4. Published on October 5, 2026, the report notes that the game is still several years away from release, but was revealed at an early stage so the studio can build the project alongside its community.

The new project will move the world of Gielinor to Unreal Engine, departing from the traditional RuneTek technology used by the series. Jagex has not yet specified the exact engine version, target platforms, subscription model, or detailed mechanics regarding combat and progression.

Jagex emphasized that RuneScape 4 will be an independent experience that coexists with RuneScape, Old School RuneScape, and RuneScape: Dragonwilds, rather than replacing them. All three existing titles will retain their own dedicated teams, roadmaps, and ongoing investments.

Set during the Sixth Age of Gielinor, RS4 will begin in Ashenfall years after the events of RuneScape: Dragonwilds and the destruction of the dragon queen Kuldra. The studio plans to gradually expand the world into both classic and new locations. Further details and information on how players can participate in development are scheduled to be shared in 2027.
